In 1818, Mary Shelley published her revolutionary novel, “Frankenstein: or, the Modern Prometheus”. Shelley’s chilling tale has become what many scholars agree to be a creation myth for the modern world. Shortly after the first printing, as many as three different versions for the stage were produced. In celebration of the 200th anniversary of Shelley’s book, Lake Forest College Department of Theater is proud to present our own adaptation, created by the director and ensemble.
Journaling years later, Mary Shelley wrote that the idea for “Frankenstein” appeared to her as “a waking dream, a reverie….”.
It is in this spirit that we present “Frankenstein” as an immersive-theatrical experience.
You, the audience, shall be as ghosts, able to move freely during the production and view the action from any angle or distance that you wish, in order to become fully immersed in the story and the characters — as if in your own waking dream.
“Frankenstein” is a site-specific production and will take place in and outside of Calvin Durand Hall, located on “middle campus” of Lake Forest College.
Audience members should enter through the main doors of Stuart Commons (student center) and take a right to reach the box office. You will not be allowed to enter Calvin Durand Hall directly.
There is limited but free parking on middle campus near the student center. Please read and follow instructions on the signs posted in all major parking areas. There is a large free parking lot located across from the Athletic Center on south campus, a short five minute walk away.
Please allow yourself extra time to reach the venue, as late seating will not be permitted. If you require special assistance, please make sure to mention this when you email to reserve your tickets.
What is an “Immersive” production?
Immersive theatre has been growing in popularity over the last several years in the United States. Immersive theatre seeks to break down the traditional barriers between actors and audience. This allows audience members to feel immersed in the action of the story in a unique and powerful way.
Are the actors going to talk to me? What am I supposed to do, exactly?
No, the actors will not interact with you in any way. Think of yourself as a voyeur, just a fly on the wall, invisible to the actors. The only thing you need to do is turn off your cell-phone and enjoy the experience.
Do I have to stand the entire time?
Not at all. Once inside the hall, there will be plenty of places to sit and enjoy the show. But you are also free to move around, change seats, stand, sit .. it’s up to you!
Is the production inside or outside of Calvin Durand Hall?
Both. The production will begin and end outside in the courtyard, but the bulk of the play will be performed indoors.
What if the weather is bad?
In the novel, Victor creates his monster on “a cold dreary night in November”, so what could be better?
The show will perform as planned rain or shine, cold or heat. We ask that you monitor weather conditions and plan accordingly. In case of severe weather, the outside scenes will be performed indoors.
Why are there two shows each night?
Due to the nature of our production, we are limiting the number of audience members for each show to 30. Having two shows - one at 7PM and one at 9PM - allows us to reach more audience members for this unique experience.
How long is the show?
Each performance will last approximately 65 minutes.
Is it okay to bring my child?
We believe that parents are able to make the best decisions regarding what is appropriate for their children. In an effort to remain true to Mary Shelley’s original work, our story presents dark and heavy themes. And while there are elements of physical violence, the show is free of graphic and explicit content, and sudden loud noises (gun-fire).
Can I record or take photos of the show?
Absolutely not. Cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned off for the duration of the show. For the safety of yourself and the actors, your attention should not be diverted from the action.
What if I need to leave the show for some reason?
We will have staff available and clearly visible inside the room at all times. If you need assistance for anything, please look for a staff member wearing an official “Frankenstein” shirt, and they will be able to help you with anything you need.
